SHANGHAI is working to build a closer relationship with St Petersburg on economic, cultural and educational ventures, city Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday.

The two cities are already cooperating in several sectors, and a deeper exchange is expected in the future, Han said during a meeting with Valentina Matvienko, mayor of the Russian city, in Shanghai yesterday.

Yesterday also marked the 20th anniversary of a sister-city relationship between the two towns.

Matvienko said history has already demonstrated that the friendship between the two cities is long-standing. She said she was impressed by Shanghai's rapid development.
