Line 12 construction to begin this year

CONSTRUCTION of Metro Line 12 will start within this year and be completed at the end of 2012, according to a newspaper report today.

The subway line linking Shanghai's Qixin Road in Minhang District to Shangchuan Road in Pudong New Area stretches 39.5 kilometers through 8 districts. It will include 32 underground stations, 14 of which will connect to nine other lines, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Two parking lots will be set up at Zhongchun Road Station in Minhang and Jinqiao Station in Pudong.

Underground stations that are 140-meters long will be equipped with screen doors and obstacle free facilities for disabled people. The maximum speed of the subway trains is expected to hit 80 kilometers per hour and the line will have a capacity of 56,000 people per hour.

Metro operators told the newspaper the interval between every two trains was set at four minutes at the beginning and would be reduced to two minutes in the future.
