JIADING District police have caught a motorbike gang of nine people responsible for more than 20 cases of stealing gold necklaces. The thefts took place in Jiading, Baoshan, Putuo and Zhabei districts.
In one case, at about 7:25am on May 20, a cyclist surnamed Xiao felt a pain in her throat and noticed two men on a motorcycle speeding away with her necklace.
She reported the case and police found the motorcycle she described abandoned on the road. It belonged to Zhuo Pai from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, who had a criminal record. Evidence from victims in similar cases and videos from traffic cameras indicated Zhuo had taken part in the robberies with different partners.
Police found Zhuo through following the suspect's fellow villager, Zhuo Nengzi. They discovered the identities of the other eight gang members and gathered evidence for their part in the robberies in a six-month investigation.
They caught them together in a house on Zhennan Road in Putuo District on Saturday.
