British prime minister in Baghdad ahead of expected troops cuts

BRITISH Prime Minister Gordon Brown is holding meetings with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad.

The visit today comes less than a week after Britain announced plans to substantially scale back its troop numbers in Iraqi next year. There are currently 4,000 British troops in Iraq, mostly based near the southern city of Basra.

Brown's meetings will include talks with Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, and other top officials.

The stop in Baghdad also coincides with preparations for a planned fact-finding visit to Baghdad by US presidential candidate Barack Obama.
