THE good news is that it's getting cooler. The bad news is that Shanghai's first typhoon this summer is on its way, weathermen said yesterday.

Typhoon Kalmaegi, the seventh tropical cyclone of the year, will bring storms and gales to the city tomorrow, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

From midnight, the city will see up to 100 millimeters of rain. Gales in the downtown area are expected to reach up to 74 kilometers an hour. Coastal areas will see gales of up to 88kph and up to 117kph at the Yangshan Deep-Water Port, forecasters said.

The rain and wind are expected to weaken from Sunday when maximum temperatures will drop to between 33 to 34 degrees Celsius.

Kalmaegi was expected to land in Taiwan last night, and will move toward Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, according to Man Liming, a forecaster with the bureau.

"As we are still watching closely of Kalmaegi's intensity and route after landing, we suggest people to pay attention to the latest weather forecast to know its influence on the city."

Today's maximum temperature will be 34 degrees and there will be rain in some areas in the afternoon.

Yesterday the maximum temperature reached 37 degrees.
