A NEW fund to help students was launched by the Shanghai Charity Foundation and Taiwan pop singer Keung Hang yesterday.

Named Trace of Love, it will help needy primary and middle school students. The fund will also help students who suffer from serious diseases, officials said.

The first donation to the fund, 500,000 yuan (US$71,428), was provided by Daphne Shoes.

Keung, who is popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as on the mainland, said he kept in touch with several needy students, some suffering serious illnesses, through charity TV programs in Shanghai and Fujian Province.

"I think I should do something for them, but my own power is not strong enough to help all the needy students," said Keung. "So I want to urge more people to help."

Officials with the foundation said they planned to expand the fund later to extend help to high school and college students.
