A PILOT campaign is planned to get customers to place rubbish in trash bins in two fast-food restaurants in Jing'An District, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

The district government will arrange volunteers to spread the idea in one KFC outlet and one McDonald's outlet.

Any customer to clear their table of waste after eating will be given a small gift during the campaign, according to the report.

It only takes a customer several seconds to clean the table and it will save a lot of time for cleaning staff, said district officials, who added that fast-food outlets in other countries don't need to have so many cleaners. The officials said that customers in other countries take their trays to the appointed place and dump trash in the bins.

Officials want to encourage such good habits here, which will make fast-food even faster. If the campaign is successful, it will be expanded to more fast-food outlets in the district.

The newspaper found that most KFC and McDonald's customers at outlets along Nanjing Road W. don't take garbage to trash bins before leaving.

However, 40 out of 50 people said they were willing to clear their table before leaving.

According to the report, both KFC and McDonald's said customers are welcome to clear their own tables of trash.
