VEHICLES should pass security checks before entering Beijing beginning next week, Beijing Police announced yesterday. Police officers stationed at check points will be equipped with weapons and sniffling dogs.

Hundreds of check points will be set up at Beijing's highway entrances, ring roads and downtown areas to ensure a safe Olympic Games, according to a Beijing Times report.

Each vehicle entering the capital during the Games will be thoroughly examined.

In some suburban areas, checks have already begun, the newspaper said.

Security staff members were trained to use electronic probes that scan underneath vehicles at a check point in Tongzhou. Sniffer dogs were also used to detect explosives.

Beijing police will also board trains to check passengers and bags, according to the newspaper.

Police officers at check points will wear helmets, bullet-proof vests and stab-proof gloves. They will also carry pistols, rifles and batons. Some points will also have sniffer dogs and scanners.
