Police seize loans gang

POLICE have cracked down on a gang of loan sharks in Jiading District, detaining 17 people for alleged kidnapping, blackmailing and swindling.

Police officers also seized 1 million yuan (US$146,000) during the operation.

Xu Hongbiao, the suspected gang leader, and accomplices sought victims in underground casinos in Jiading and lent money to them at high interest rates.

Police in Jiading received several reports that claimed family members had been kidnapped and relatives had been blackmailed into paying their debts.

Jiading police set up a task force to investigate Xu's gang. Officers raided a hotel in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, on February 28 and detained five suspects including Xu. They also seized knives and wooden clubs at the scene.
