TWO thousand temporary apartments had been completed yesterday by Shanghai Construction Group in Dujiangyan, an earthquake-hit city in Sichuan Province.

Shanghai has promised to build 10,000 temporary apartments in Dujiangyan and plans to make all of them available for use on July 25.

Shanghai Construction Group said building work began on June 26 in six villages around Dujiangyan, and the company had sent its best workers to help.

Zhang Huaping, a spokesman for the group, said the workers were operating "at full speed" to complete the apartments by July 15.

The apartments should be ready for use on July 25 after passing quality tests.

The group is also setting up 15,000 temporary apartments in Mianyang, another Sichuan city that suffered in the May 12 earthquake. By yesterday, the Shanghai workers had completed the major structures there.

"We have finished the major part of the program. Now we are working on the support facilities," said Zhang. The Mianyang apartments are expected to be finished around the middle of this month.
