A TOP-LEVEL Party official has held talks with private representatives of the 14th Dalai Lama in Beijing.
Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, told the two representatives, Lodi Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen, that the central government's policy toward the Dalai Lama was consistent: "The door for dialogue is always open."
Du told the representatives:
The Dalai Lama should openly and explicitly promise, and prove it by his actions, not to support activities to disturb the Beijing Olympics;
He should not support plots to fan violent criminal activities;
He should not support but actively curb the violent terrorist activities of the "Tibetan Youth Congress;"
He should not support any arguments or activities to seek "Tibet independence."
The adherence to the Party leadership in Tibet, the socialist system and the regional autonomy of ethnic minorities would not be altered, he said.
The central government would continue apply its policies in Tibet, support the region's economic and social development and work to improve living standards there, Du said.
He briefed the representatives about the earthquake that hit Wenchuan on May 12 and the ensuing relief work.
Du said at time of difficulty, the Chinese nation had shown strong cohesiveness and a profound love among its people. The Dalai Lama's representatives also expressed ideas on issues and said they would report the results to Dalai.
