A YELLOW heat alert was issued for the first time this year as the maximum temperature was expected to surpass 35 degrees Celsius today, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The alert was raised at 12:50pm.

Forecasters said thunderstorms are likely in some parts of the city between this afternoon and midnight.

The bureau reminded people that it is also very humid and that people need to drink more fluids to prevent dehydration.

Daily highs will range between 32 and 34 degrees in the next few days. Thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon, the bureau said.
