AN airport near Beijing has been upgraded for the Olympics and Paralympics with a new terminal, enlarged tarmac and longer runway.

The new terminal with a floor space of 55,000 square meters was built at Wusu International Airport about 15 kilometers south of Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi Province.

It will open on July 1 and only be used on standby for Olympic flights during the Games and Paralympics period, an airport spokesman said.

The new terminal was designed to handle up to 6 million passengers annually by 2015. The old terminal was renovated and will continue to be used and the runway was extended to 3,600 meters to accommodate the Airbus A380. The tarmac was enlarged to take 18 more aircraft bays.
