THE Eco-City project will be in the middle of rebuilt Chenjia Town.
By 2010, people will be living in a zero-emission, car-free and carbon-free recycling environment.
No gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles will be allowed but energy-saving cars such as battery-powered cars or fuel-cell vehicles will be permitted. Residents will be encouraged to cycle around the town instead of drive.
Public facilities and transport will be just a five-minute walk from residences.
Eventually this area could well have the best air quality in Shanghai. Chenjia Town is being developed by the Shanghai Industrial Investment Corp and designed by British-based engineering consultancy Arup.
