TANGJIASHAN quake lake will be turned into a scenic spot, a Sichuan Province government official revealed yesterday during a news conference.

According to a reconstruction plan for Beichuan County, the development of the quake lake is important, said Chen Xingchun, secretary general of the Communist Party Committee of Mianyang City in Sichuan.

Xinhuanet.com reported yesterday that Chen said experts from Mianyang will study the lakes that were formed by landslides after the May 12 earthquake. Development hasn't started due to ongoing relief work in the area.

According to incomplete statistics, there are 14 quake lakes in Beichuan. TANGJIASHAN is the largest of those lakes and fears that it would burst had put 1.3 million people at risk with its 250 million cubic meters of water. However, engineers successfully created a drainage channel earlier this month to end the flood threat.
