DUTCH club FC Twente says former England coach Steve McClaren has signed a two-year contract as manager.

McClaren, 47, has been looking for work since England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008. FC Twente, based in the city of Enschede, bested Ajax in playoffs in the Netherlands' top division Eredivisie to claim a spot in Champions League qualifying next season.

Twente's previous coach Fred Rutten, left to lead German club Schalke.

In a statement Friday, McClaren said it was "a very exciting time for the club" and it would be a "great challenge to lead FC Twente in the Eredivisie and Champions League."

McLaren coached Middlesbrough from 2001-2006, winning the League Cup in 2004 and reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2004.
