ABOUT three tons of gasoline fuel began leaking in Hongkou District yesterday afternoon. It is believed to have originated at a nearby pump station.

The Sinopec pump outlet, on the crossing of Zhoujiazui Road and Gongping Road, was temporarily shut down and cordoned off by police as the fire control authority worked to control the fuel spill, according to witnesses. Fire control investigators are still looking into the source of the spill but believe the oil most probably leaked from the gas station only a dozen meters away from where the spill was first spotted.

The emergency was reported by a team of telecommunication workers who happened to notice the leak while checking on a wiring system inside an underground well at about 2pm yesterday.

Firemen poured in large amounts of water to dilute the fuel before removing it from the underground well with pumps.

No casualties were reported.
