THE Jing'an District People's Court sentenced Wang Xuefeng, 40, to 11 years in prison for defrauding 1.69 million yuan (US$244,000) from four fish-tank suppliers.

Wang rented space in the Hengshan Moller Villa Hotel to run a Japanese restaurant from November 2005 to January 2006. But the restaurant failed to make a profit and accrued major debts to suppliers.

To repay the debt, Wang told suppliers he needed to buy aquatic products as New Year gifts for staff at the hotel. Wang then sold the 1.89 million yuan worth of aquatic products at low prices. He paid 200,000 yuan to the suppliers and spent the rest. He surrendered himself to police in February.
