THE city's second power station with more than 1 million kilowatts' capacity has passed testing procedures and was put into operation on Saturday to alleviate June electricity consumption peaks.

The total capacity at the Waigaoqiao Power Plant has reached 5 million kilowatts, officials said yesterday.

Shanghai's first power generator with more than 1 million kilowatts' capacity opened at the Waigaoqiao Power Plant in March. It generates electricity 2 to 3 percent more efficiently than other generators of its kind.

The second generator was put into operation about one year ahead of schedule. The two generators operate on the most advanced technology in the world, which removes sulfur dioxide from the exhaust flue gases in power generators that burn coal.

The process reduces emissions to help protect the environment, officials said.

The two generators can save about 800,000 tons of raw coal consumption annually.
