Armed police in Shanghai have set up a SWAT team to ensure the city's safety, especially during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Shanghai will host 12 Olympic football matches, including group matches, a semifinal, and the bronze medal game in August. |
ARMED police in Shanghai held an anti-terrorist drill this morning in preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Xinmin Evening News reported today.
The simulated maneuver started at 8:30am in which terrorists kidnapped spectators at a stadium.
Five gunmen kidnapped three hostages in the stands and installed a time bomb. Three groups of special weapons and tactics (SWAT) forces moved to the area from different directions during hostage negotiations with the terrorists.
Snipers were deployed.
SWAT officers blocked and controlled the scene after negotiations failed, triggering an attack. Snipers shot three of the five terrorists. Officers rescued the hostages while the remaining terrorists were blinded and deafened by stun grenades.
Meanwhile, officers received information via walkie-talkie that terrorists had hijacked a bus. One SWAT team drove a van to intercept the bus, another set up a barricade and the third team hid beside the road.
When the bus stopped in front of the barricade, the three teams launched a simultaneous attack.
Passengers on the bus were rescued and the terrorists were shot dead or captured, the report said.
