The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday sentenced Yu Yongkui, 41, a farmer from Fengxian District, to death.

On July 6, last year, Yu kidnapped a man surnamed Cai he met when playing poker. After learning Cai's son was a boss in construction business, Yu demanded for a ransom of 200,000 yuan (US$27,972). Cai's family paid 60,000 yuan, but Yu had already strangled Cai.
