A POLYGRAPH helped traffic police solve the puzzle of a dramatic car crash in which one person was killed and two others in the vehicle both denied they were the driver, traffic police said. Huang Jun died of his injuries sustained in the crash on November 14 when the vehicle the three men were in swerved to avoid a jaywalker and hit a transit bus, causing the car to flip over in Nanhui District. Huang's friends Zhang Liang, 19, and Hu Chao were in the car at the time of the accident. Police said Zhang, who doesn't have a driver's license, was the driver after he failed a polygraph test. Initially, Hu claimed he was the driver. But he retracted his confession a few days later, saying that his good friend Zhang asked him to take the blame because his punishment would be less severe since he had a license, according to police. Not sure of who to believe, police combed the inside of the car and found two broken teeth in the front passenger seat. Hu lost two teeth in the crash. Tests proved the teeth belonged to Hu. Officers then gave both men the lie detector test, which showed Zhang was not telling the truth, police said. Zhang will be charged for causing a death while driving without a license. If found guilty, his punishment will be more severe because he mislead police, thus obstructing justice, officers said. ``Zhang promised he would cover the medical bills for Huang," Hu allegedly told police. "I agreed to help because he is a good friend." However, police said that Hu told officers he started to feel more stress in the days after the accident as Huang's family kept asking for more money to cover the soaring medical expenses while Zhang remained silent. Huang was in a coma for 13 days before he died.
