MORE than 500,000 people are still stranded in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, today as the worst snowstorm in 50 years continued to paralyze railways, roads and flights.

The number of passengers stuck at the main train station in Guangzhou dropped to 200,000 today as the provincial railway authority urged people to give up their annual trip home for next week's Spring Festival, Dragon TV said today.

The Lunar New Year falls on February 7.

About 500,000 people camped out at the station's plaza over the last few days as heavy snowfall in 14 provinces cut off parts of the busy railway line that starts in the city and ends in Beijing.

Traffic on the Beijing-Guangzhou line may not return to normal for three to five days.

The Guangzhou Railway Station yesterday added 40 temporary restrooms in the 10 shelters set up at the station's square for waiting crowds. It also added mobile food vendors and medical treatment venues, People's Daily said on its Website today.

The report cited doctors at the station as saying that more than 100 passengers have passed out in the past few days due to hypoglycemia while anxiously waiting in the cold weather.

The limited number of toilets may not be enough to serve the huge crowds as people complained that they can not even make their way through the masses to the restrooms.

Some passengers urinated in the plaza among the crowds, creating a health threat, not to mention a horrible odor, the report said.

The Guangzhou Environment and Sanitation Bureau dispatched 120 cleaners to the station.

The amount of rubbish mounted to more than 100 tons every day at the station but cleaners said they have to carry it out in plastic bags as it is impossible for garbage trucks to be used, the report said.
