SHANGHAI dispatched 500 armed policemen to help 1,300 cleaners clear snow off highways and bridges last night to ensure the streets are safe, a local television station reported today. The city's heaviest snow in 24 years fell yesterday and the temperature dipped below zero degrees Celsius last night. Nanpu Bridge was covered by at least 10 centimeters of snow as of 1am this morning, according to Dragon TV. Armed police and cleaners cleared the Yangpu, Nanpu, Lupu and Xupu bridges, as well as all bridges spanning Suzhou Creek and all tunnels before morning rush hour. Armed police were also ordered to clear snow and ice off main roads in the city, the report added. The city's cleaning department allocated 18 vehicles and about 550,000 tons of snow solvent to help keep streets clear. More snow is expected again today, the National Meteorological Center forecast this morning.
