THE Guangzhou government has offered food and shelters to 150,000 stranded travelers while evacuating half of them to nearby exhibition halls and gymnasiums, a local news Website reported today.

Heavy snow caused a more than 136 electric trains to lose power in Hunan Province on the trunk line between Beijing and Guangzhou on Friday, leaving most of the railways in Guangzhou paralyzed, according to the report of Southcn.com.

Most of the stranded passengers are migrant workers trying to get home for the coming Spring Festival, the report said.

The city government has evacuated more than 70,000 passengers to 14 exhibition halls of the China Import and Export Commodities Fair, which is held in April yearly, and two gymnasiums near the station.

The government will open more exhibition halls, theaters and schools for other stranded passengers, the report said.

The government also promised to keep passengers warm and provide them with food.

The city's Tianhe District government has distributed 20,000 meal boxes and prepared 7,000 quilts for the passengers, the report added. The railway station is in Tianhe.

The city's underground train stations will be open around the clock for railway passengers if the number of stranded passengers continues to increase.

Guangzhou Railway Station has installed handrails in the waiting halls. The handrails can prevent crowds from pushing each other as well as give people something to lean against, the report said, citing a station official.

Armed policemen are on duty around the clock in the station, according to the report.

Hu Yadong, the head of the city's railway department, invited stranded passengers to spend the Spring Festival in the city.

Massive train delays also happened in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, leaving 30,000 passengers stranded.
