INTEL Corp signed a memorandum yesterday with China's YouTube-like site Tudou.com to explore video sharing technologies on wireless network and develop video applications for mobile devices, the two firms announced yesterday.
Tudou, one of the nation's most popular video-sharing Websites, will also use Intel technology-backed servers to improve its capacities in dealing with the fast-growing video demand on its site. In addition, it will help Intel promote its brand on its platform through promotional videos. No financial terms were disclosed.
The deal marked another move by Intel to develop its wireless Internet technologies in China, where the higherspeed third generation mobile phone network is due to be launched in time for the Beijing Olympics next year.
Intel formed a strategic partnership with Shanghai Media Group, the country's second largest broadcaster, in June to co-develop wireless broadband and mobile technology for high-definition TV programs. It provided technology training, test equipment and lab and software solutions.
The cooperation with Tudou will involve development of new products for mobile devices such as software for downloading and uploading of videos based on Tudou's existing download and upload manager iTudou, and speed up application of Intel's Mobile Internet Device with the site.
This is to enable users to watch high-quality videos at any time and anywhere. Sean Maloney, executive vice president of Intel, said the cooperation will advance both f irms' development when interactivity and user-generated contents are playing an increasing role on the Internet.
"We're interested in making content out of this kind of devices with Tudou," Maloney said.
Tudou, which translates as "potato" in Chinese, is a hot draw among China's rapidly growing video-sharing users, luring US$30 million in venture capital, the most in the sector.
As of May, Tudou had more than 30 million independent users, or about 30 percent of Chinese broadband Web users, according to Nielsen NetRatings.
