Shanghai Daily: World http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/list.asp?id=7 Shanghai Daily World en 'Night of the Living Dead' actor Bill Hinzman dies http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493822 7 Feb 2012 12:07:44 +0800 World BILL Hinzman, who was cast on the spot as a zombie in 1968 cult film "Night of the Living Dead" in a role that earned him the longlasting admiration of horror movie fans, has died at age 75, his daughter said yesterday.

Hinzman died of cancer on Sunday evening at his home in Darlington, Pennsylvania, his daughter Heidi Hinzman told Reuters.

He played a prominent role in Director George Romero's low-budget, black-and-white 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead," which is credited with revolutionizing the zombie genre.

Hinzman was working as an assistant cameraman on the film when Romero decided to cast him as the zombie in the movie's opening sequence.

"We'd like to tell the story that it was a hard audition session, but Bill was there and old enough and thin enough and he had an old suit," said the film's producer Russ Streiner.

Dressed in that suit, Hinzman appears at a Pennsylvania cemetery and attacks a pair of young siblings by knocking the man's head against a tombstone and chasing the woman.

He lurches across an open field and eventually chases the woman into a farmhouse.

Fans called Heinzman "No. 1 zombie," said Streiner, who also played a character named Johnny who fought with Hinzman in the cemetery.

"He was a very popular guy, he was very accessible to the fans," Streiner added.

Hinzman also went on to direct and star in the 1980s horror movies "The Majorettes" and "FleshEater."

He will be cremated, as he had asked, said Heidi Hinzman.

"He always joked with me that if he got buried he would come back," she said.

Oscar producers urge fans to celebrate movie memories http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493821 7 Feb 2012 9:34:24 +0800 World FACING a future where many movies will be seen in homes, Oscar organizers yesterday unveiled this year's awards show theme at an annual luncheon honoring nominees by asking fans to relish memories of why they love movies and going to theaters.
"Celebrate the movies in all of us," is the idea that Academy Award co-producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer, as well as Tom Sherak, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are asking film lovers to espouse this year.
"I hope this theme is something you guys can celebrate with us," Grazer told the audience of A-list Oscar nominees including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Viola Davis.
Grazer, producer of past best movie winner "A Beautiful Mind," said that in these current days when more and more movies are delivered directly to homes via video-on-demand systems using the Internet, satellite and cable TV, it is time to remember the communal experience of shared laughter and emotion that people experience in a theater.
To reinforce the theme, the academy has put a range of movie stars and beloved film roles on its Oscar poster -- Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump" and Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in "Gone With the Wind," among them -- and Grazer said Oscar's home stage inside the Kodak Theater in Hollywood would be "re-imagined" to look and feel like a movie theater.
He said Oscar host Billy Crystal has a "fantastic film" to open the show, and Grazer and Mischer had only three goals for the ceremony that will take place on February 26: be funny, show some class, and be on time.
On that last note, Mischer admonished nominees to keep their speeches down to a brief 45 seconds, and he introduced a comical video in which Hanks tutored nominees on how to "make it short, make it simple (and) make it sincere" when it came to speeches.

Models form rights group ahead of New York Fashion Week http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493820 7 Feb 2012 9:33:09 +0800 World Fashion models in the United States launched a rights group yesterday ahead of New York Fashion Week to seek workplace standards including backstage privacy to stop unauthorized nude photos and a program to provide confidential advice on dealing with sexual harassment.
Model Sara Ziff, 29, who has worked since she was 14, founded the nonprofit Model Alliance because she said she has seen the fashion industry disregard child labor laws, evade financial transparency and tolerate sexual abuse in the workplace.
"Most models start their adult careers as minors and they labor in an unregulated business knowing that they are highly replaceable," Ziff said in a statement.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) said it had offered Ziff advice in starting the group. "Change comes from action and the Model Alliance can be a catalyst for change," said CFDA chief executive Steven Kolb.
Designer Diane von Furstenberg, president of the CFDA, is working with the alliance during Fashion Week, a high-profile global fashion event which starts on Thursday, to implement a rule that clears the backstage area of photographers and non-essential staff when models have to change clothes.
The alliance has also produced a draft bill of rights to empower models to demand fair treatment and is establishing a confidential service offering advice on how to deal with sexual harassment and abuse.

Record 129 dolphins stranded at Cape Cod this year http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493818 7 Feb 2012 9:30:08 +0800 World A record 129 dolphins have beached themselves along the scenic shores south of Boston in the past month, puzzling researchers trying to figure out why so many of the cetaceans are getting stranded in Cape Cod Bay.
The numbers recorded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) represent the largest stranding of a single species in the northeastern United States since the fund began keeping records in 1999.
Since the strandings began on January 12, rescuers have released 37 of the marine mammals into deeper waters and 92 have died or washed ashore already dead, the fund said.
Researchers have performed nine full necropsies but have not found any pattern of disease or injury, IFAW spokeswoman Kerry Branon said.
The dolphins have swum ashore in five towns along the hook-shaped Cape Cod, concentrated in the town of Wellfleet.
"Wellfleet is like a hook within a hook," Branon said.
The dolphins, which tend to get stuck on the bay side of the cape, are assessed by rescuers on site and released in deeper water on the ocean side if deemed healthy.
Researchers are still trying to determine what brings the dolphins to Cape Cod Bay each year from January to April and why so many have been stranded this year.
In part it is because dolphins operate with a group mentality, where many may follow one animal toward shallow water, IFAW said.
Marine biologists who rescue the animals check for signs of stress and body condition, run blood analyses, hearing tests and tag the dolphins with an identifier before releasing them.

Study: Green tea drinkers more agile http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493766 7 Feb 2012 4:52:16 +0800 World ELDERLY adults who regularly drink green tea may stay more agile and independent than their peers over time, according to a Japanese study that covered thousands of people.

Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals that may help ward off the cell damage that can lead to disease. Researchers have been studying green tea's effect on everything from cholesterol to the risk of certain cancers, with mixed results so far.

For the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers decided to examine the question of whether green tea drinkers have a lower risk of frailty and disability as they grow older.

Yasutake Tomata of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and his colleagues followed nearly 14,000 adults aged 65 or older for three years.

They found those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to develop "functional disability", or problems with daily activities or basic needs.

Specifically, almost 13 percent of adults who drank less than a cup of green tea per day became functionally disabled, compared with just over 7 percent of people who drank at least five cups a day.

"Green tea consumption is significantly associated with a lower risk of incident functional disability, even after adjustment for possible confounding factors," Tomata and his colleagues wrote.

The study did not prove that green tea alone kept people spry as they grew older.

While green tea and its extracts are considered safe in small amounts, they do contain caffeine and small amounts of vitamin K, which means it could interfere with drugs that prevent blood clotting.

Bitter cold claims more lives across Europe as temperatures plummet http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493815 7 Feb 2012 1:31:53 +0800 World EUROPE'S bitterly cold weather claimed another 35 lives yesterday.

In southern Bulgaria eight people died when melting snow caused a dam to burst after days of heavy rain and flood an entire village.

Four people drowned and more than 50 were evacuated, the Interior Ministry said. Four more people died when their cars were swept away by high waters.

"There are demolished houses and people in distress," the ministry said in a statement.

Bulgaria warned neighboring Greece and Turkey that two other dams were expected to overflow.

Gas supplies to the European Union from Russia improved at the weekend but have not fully recovered, the European Commission said, as Italy convened a crisis committee to handle what it called critical shortages of Russian gas.

The cold snap has killed hundreds of people in Europe.

Nine died over the past 24 hours in Poland, bringing the total to 62 since the end of January.

Temperatures fell to minus 24 Celsius at night in northeastern parts of the country.

In Croatia's Dalmatia region, more than 100 villages were cut off by snow in the hinterland of the Adriatic coast, the emergency service center said, and more snow was forecast.

Rescuers reached some of the Dalmatian villages on Sunday.

In one village, a woman gave birth in her house with the help of a neighbor, while a midwife gave instructions by phone.

"The baby girl is fine and beautiful and I'll probably name her Snow White, given the circumstances," the mother, Marta Glavota, told reporters.

Ten people have died in Serbia so far, Montenegro reported its second death and Croatia said four people had died.

In Serbia, where 11,000 people remain cut off and a state of emergency has been declared, temperatures were forecast to stay below zero until mid-February.

Bosnia was paralyzed for the fourth day with snow blocking cities. Helicopters were delivering baby food and aid packages to isolated villages.

Bosnia recorded its eighth victim yesterday after an 87-year-old woman died of hypothermia.

In the Czech Republic, temperatures of minus 39.4 degrees Celsius were recorded in the southwest along the German border.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to fall further. At least 20 people have died in the Czech Republic, after two homeless people were reported dead overnight.

US approves newest round of sanctions against Iran http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493814 7 Feb 2012 1:31:42 +0800 World UNITED States President Barack Obama has ordered new sanctions against Iran, including its Central Bank, moving to enforce a law he signed in December.

In a letter to Congress yesterday, Obama said more sanctions are warranted "particularly in light of the deceptive practices of the Central Bank of Iran and other Iranian banks." He said the problems included the hiding transactions of sanctioned parties, the deficiencies of Iran's anti-money laundering regime and the unacceptably high risk posed to the entire international financial system posed by Iran's activities.

The Central Bank sanctions were included as an amendment in the wide-ranging defense bill Obama signed into law at the end of last year. The White House said Obama signed the executive order approving the sanctions on Sunday.

The new measures come as the White House tries to both ratchet up pressure on Tehran to abandon its nuclear program and dissuade Israel from launching a unilateral strike on Iran.

Obama said on Sunday that he does not believe Israel has yet decided whether to attack Iran. The president said he still believes a diplomatic solution is possible.

Iran insists its nuclear pursuit is for peaceful purposes, but the West accuses Iran of developing the know-how to build a nuclear bomb. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last week would not dispute a report that he believes Israel may attack Iran this spring in an attempt to set back the Islamic republic's nuclear program.

In recent weeks, both the US and European Union have imposed harsher sanctions on Iran's oil sector, the lifeblood of its economy.

In Washington, the Senate Banking Committee approved more penalties on Tehran last week. The sweeping measure would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the US stock exchanges to disclose any Iran-related business, and expand penalties for mining joint ventures with Tehran.

Romanian PM announces immediate resignation http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493813 7 Feb 2012 1:31:31 +0800 World THE Romanian prime minister yesterday announced the immediate resignation of himself and his government, saying he wanted to protect the stability of the country.

Emil Boc said he was resigning "to ease the social situation" referring to weeks of protests in Romania over austerity measures that he introduced in 2010.

Boc, who became prime minister in 2008, urged Romania's feuding politicians to be mature and rapidly vote for a new government. He defended his record, saying that he had taken "difficult decisions ... not because I wanted to, but because I had to."

He added that the International Monetary Fund has forecast growth of up to 2 percent this year lower than expected, but higher than the European Union average.

"This is a victory for those that demonstrated on the streets," said Crin Antonescu, head of the opposition Liberal Party. "The most corrupt, incompetent and lying government" since the 1989 anti-Communist revolt has gone, he said.

President Traian Basescu is expected to hold talks yesterday with the country's political leaders about a new prime minister, his spokesman Valeriu Turcan said.

Romania signed up for a US$26 billion loan with the IMF, the European Union and the World Bank in 2009 to help pay salaries and pensions, after the economy shrank by more than 7 percent. In 2010, the government increased sales tax from 19 percent to 24 percent and cut public workers' salaries by a quarter to reduce the budget deficit.

Fire kills husband of missing US woman, 2 sons http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493812 7 Feb 2012 1:31:21 +0800 World JOSH Powell's note was simple and short, a farewell to the world after two years of being scrutinized in the media, hammered by police and questioned by judges, prosecutors and social workers, living his life under a microscope since the day his wife vanished.

Minutes before he set fire to his home, killing himself and his two young sons days after he was denied custody and ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation, Powell sent an email to his attorney.

"I'm sorry, goodbye," the Utah man wrote.

The Sunday blaze at Powell's home brought yet another twist in the very public scandal that began when Susan Powell vanished in 2009.

A social worker brought the two boys to Josh Powell's home on Sunday for what was to be a supervised visit, and Powell let his sons inside but then blocked the social worker from entering.

The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas. Moments later, the home burst into flames.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Sargeant Ed Troyer said emails Powell sent just prior to the explosion that authorities were made aware of seemed to confirm that Powell planned the deadly blast.

Susan Powell, the 28-year-old mother of two, was reported missing on December 7, 2009.

Authorities in the couple's hometown of West Valley City in Utah quickly turned their attention to Josh Powell. He repeatedly denied any involvement in her disappearance.

About a month later, police spent 12 days in the Utah desert looking for clues, and Josh Powell and his father, Steven, quickly disappeared from the limelight.

On Sunday, the lawyer for Susan Powell's parents said the children had started talking to their grandparents about the night their mother vanished.

"The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk," said attorney Steve Downing, whose clients had custody of the children. "Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared."

The children, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charles, were ordered by a judge to then go live with Susan's parents as the parallel cases were investigated.

Sargeant Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah said it was too soon to say how Josh Powell's death may impact their probe.

US decides to close embassy in Syria http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493807 7 Feb 2012 1:03:58 +0800 World The United States closed its embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus yesterday in a dramatic escalation of pressure on President Bashar Assad to give up power.

The US evacuated all its diplomats from the country as Syrian forces intensified shelling on the restive city of Homs.

Already, more than 5,400 people have been killed since the Arab Spring-inspired uprising that began last March, according to the United Nations.

"We have been relentless in sending a message that it is time for Assad to go," US President Barack Obama said during an interview with NBC. "This is not going to be a matter of if, it's going to be a matter of when."

The US vowed to step up pressure on Assad to quit but ruled out military intervention. Obama said a negotiated solution in Syria was possible.

The US State Department warned last month it would close the embassy unless Assad's government stepped up its protection. It cited concerns about the safety of personnel and recent car bombs.

Also yesterday, an explosion ripped through a gas pipeline in Homs, the state-run news agency SANA reported. It blamed terrorists.

The Syrian government says terrorists acting out a foreign conspiracy are behind the uprising, not protesters seeking change.

Syria's state-run TV denied government forces were besieging Homs, saying activists in the city were setting tires on fire to make it appear as if there was a bombardment.

Syrian security forces are "chasing the terrorists and clashing with them," it said.

Forced to veto

China said yesterday it was forced to veto a United Nations vote on Syria because it was called before differences in the proposal were bridged.

On Saturday, Russia and China vetoed a draft resolution backing an Arab League plan to promote "regime change" in Syria.

China said the resolution put undue emphasis on pressuring the Syrian government and prejudged the result of any dialogue in Syria.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin yesterday rejected criticism that China was favoring the Assad government.

Liu said China supports further dialogue to end the violence in Syria, restore Mideast stability and realize the Syrian people's desire for political reform.

Quake in Philippines claims 13, 40 missing http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493805 7 Feb 2012 0:53:36 +0800 World RESCUERS dug with picks and shovels trying to reach dozens of people trapped under houses collapsed by a strong earthquake yesterday that shook a central Philippine island and set off landslides.

At least 13 people were killed and 40 are believed missing, most of them along the shore near the epicenter of the 6.9-magnitude quake that struck in a narrow strait just off Negros Island. In the mountain village of Planas, 15 kilometers from coastal Guihulngan town in Negros Oriental province, as many as 30 houses were buried with at least 40 residents believed trapped, said Governor Roel Degamo.

"Their situation is bad because if you are covered by landslide for one hour, two hours, how can you breathe?" Mayor Ernesto Reyes said. "But we just hope for the best, that there are still survivors."

Army troops and police were deployed to help in the rescue.

At least 10 people were confirmed dead in Guihulngan, including students at a college and an elementary school and others in a town market that collapsed, Reyes said. About 100 were injured.

The quake, which hit at 11:49am local time, triggered another landslide in the mountain village of Solongon in La Libertad town, also in Negros Oriental. An unknown number of people were trapped, said La Libertad police chief inspector Eric Arrol Besario.

"We're now getting shovels and chain saws to start a rescue because there were people trapped inside. Some of them were yelling for help earlier," Besario said. Three key bridges in the town cracked and were no longer passable, he said.

Food and medicines were waiting in the provincial capital of Dumaguete, but the aid could not reach the villages because of damaged roads and bridges.

"There is a Canadian and an Indian doctor who are here for an earlier scheduled medical mission and it's good that they are helping us," said Reyes. "They have some medicines with them but that may not be enough."

Nine bridges were damaged in Negros Oriental, including four that were not passable, said Governor Degamo. The worst damage was concentrated in the province's mountainous northern portion, he said.

Philippine seismologists briefly issued a tsunami alert for the central islands. Huge waves washed out five bamboo and wooden cottages from a beach resort in La Libertad, but there were no reports of injuries, said police Superintendent Ernesto Tagle. Elsewhere along the coast, people rushed out of schools, malls and offices.

The Philippines is in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.

The latest quake was set off by movement in an undersea fault, said Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

UK Queen Elizabeth II marks 60th year of reign http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493763 7 Feb 2012 0:00:00 +0800 World QUEEN Elizabeth II marked her Diamond Jubilee yesterday with a message thanking all those who had supported her over her 60-year reign and reaffirming her dedication to serving the British people.

The 85-year-old monarch ascended the throne when her father, George VI, died on February 6, 1952. She is the longest-serving monarch after Queen Victoria, who reigned for over 63 years.

Before a year's worth of festivities to celebrate her milestone, the queen said she and her husband have been "deeply moved" to receive so many kind messages about her Diamond Jubilee.

"I am writing toa thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you have given to me and Prince Phillip over these years," she wrote in a message to the nation. "In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your service, I hope that we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighborliness."

The queen's Diamond Jubilee will be feted with a series of regional, national and international events throughout 2012.

Over the course of 2012, members of the royal family will fan out across the globe and travel to Commonwealth countries including Canada, Jamaica and Belize in honor of the queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The queen and Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, will tour the UK from March to July. The 2012 Diamond Jubilee weekend will be held from June 2-5, with the main highlight being a huge pageant on the Thames River.

Madonna's Super Bowl show marred by obscenity http://www.shanghaidaily.com/article/?id=493765 7 Feb 2012 0:00:00 +0800 World FOR all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime extravaganza on Sunday, a single rude gesture by guest singer M.I.A. is likely to be the most remembered piece of the show.

The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin.'" At the end of her lines, British singer M.I.A. appeared to sing "I don't give a (expletive)," although it was hard to hear clearly.

The incident was reminiscent of Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" eight years ago - a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers. The brief exposure of Jackson's nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put then-broadcaster CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.

The Super Bowl, shown on NBC this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million people, the biggest TV event of the year. The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.'s gesture in a late attempt to cut out the shot.

"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."

The NFL blamed a failure in NBC's delay system for allowing the gesture to be seen. Spokesman Brian McCarthy said M.I.A. did not do anything similar during rehearsals and the league had no reason to believe she would pull something like that during the actual show.

"The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans," McCarthy said.

The British singer M.I.A. is best known for her 2007 hit "Paper Planes," a Grammy nominee for record of the year that memorably features a sample of the Clash song, "Straight to Hell." It was featured on the soundtrack to the movie "Slumdog Millionaire."

Madonna had admittedly been nervous about her performance, hoping to position herself as the queen of a new generation of pop stars with an opulent show and a sharp performance that mixed her new release with more familiar songs. The 53-year-old seemed like Roman royalty when muscle-bound men carried her extravagant throne across the football field to the stage for her opening song, "Vogue."

Guests Cee Lo, Nicki Minaj and dance rockers LMFAO also made guest appearances. The best guest was clearly Cee Lo, who joined Madonna for the final song, "Like a Prayer."
