QINGDAO government officials highlighted five essential parts of "Blue Silicon Valley" during the forum.
? Institution of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Since its establishment in 2004, the institute has focused its research in ocean science. Its major research areas include: environmentally friendly technology for sustainable marine aquaculture, marine ecosystems, ocean circulation and wave dynamics, geological evolution of continental shelves and its impact on the environment and natural resources.
? School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ocean University of China
The school is part of the 80-year-old Ocean University of China and is a main contributor to the construction of the innovative pharmaceutical center in Shandong Province.
In recent years, the School of Medicine and Pharmacy has been in charge of more than 40 important national projects. Four marine drugs and a series of dietary supplement products have been developed and commercialized. Currently, the school has three drug candidates against life-threatening diseases in phase II/III clinical trials.
? Dongjiakou Port
At the southern end of Qingdao City, it is the largest integrated port in China with water more than 15 meters deep near the shore. The planned area of the port covers 70 square kilometers, and was chosen in 2009 as a national-level shipping center for energy resources and dry goods.
So far, construction of an embankment has been completed and work on the breakwater north of the port is progressing quickly. The main navigation channels leading into the harbor have been basically completed.
Nineteen commercial projects with a total investment of 70 billion yuan (US$10.82 billion) have settled down in the harbor, nine of which are mainly invested by global top 500 companies. Four berths are now open and upon completion by 2020, it will host 112 deep water berths capable of handling 370 million tons of goods a year.
? Qingdao Haixi Bay Shipbuilding Base
The base in Huangdao District is located in the south of Qingdao Port, China's second largest trading port and the largest container port in northern China. Construction of the base started in 2001. Upon completion, the base will be known to the world as the most efficient and well-equipped industrial base for ships and marine equipment.
In the first half of 2011, companies in the base turned out a combined industrial output of 7.1 billion yuan. That compared with an output of 12.9 billion yuan for all of 2010.
? Bright Moon Seaweed Group
The group is located on the western shore of Qingdao and is one of the oldest processors of seaweed.
It is a key marine economic enterprise in the city and the world's largest producer of sodium alginate, a substance used in pharmaceuticals.
Bright Moon has secured its leading position among domestic seaweed processors in 2010 with annual revenue exceeding 1.27 billion yuan and exports of US$50 million.
The company plans to build a blue marine biotech industry park covering 666,667 square meters.
Within the park, a complete industrial chain will take shape to produce marine food, cosmetics, biotechnology materials and marine bio-fertilizer.
