SHANGHAI is voted the most popular travel destination during the Spring Festival, followed by Beijing and Guangzhou, according to a survey by China Tourism Academy.

Sanya of Hainan Province and Xiamen of Fujian Province, both famous for beach resorts, and Harbin of Heilongjiang Province with ice sculptures and skiing resorts remain popular, according to the survey conducted in cooperation with Crtip.com, China's leading online travel agency.

During the seven-day holiday, more than 3 million people from around China and abroad are expected to visit Shanghai, local tourism authorities said. The figure is more or less the same as last year's.

Meanwhile, some 52,000 people will go abroad in tour groups organized by Shanghai travel agencies. Destinations in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, will attract 20,700 Shanghai tourists. European routes are also popular among locals.

As for domestic destinations, Sanya and Lijiang, a city in Yunnan Province, rank high in the wish list. For short trips, Ningbo and Tianmu Lake in Zhejiang Province are most favored by Shanghai residents.
