A speeding Benz sedan ran onto the sidewalk and smashed a store window of H&M clothing store on downtown Huaihai Road late yesterday evening, hitting and causing one pedestrian heavily injured.
Police said today the crash took place about 10:20pm on Huaihai Road M, near its intersection with Sinan Road.
Police said they had detained the driver and so far tests had ruled out possibilities of him drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs.
The victim was seriously injured but he's out of life danger, police said.
An investigation was still underway.
Witnesses said the black car was running west to east and lost control while avoiding a cab that was making a left turn.
The sedan ran onto the sidewalk, knocking down the pedestrian and smashed the shopping window of H&M, a branded clothing store which was closed for a revamp project, according to witnesses.
The Shanghai-plated car then broke down in front of the shop with its front heavily damaged, windshield totally broken and both air bags opened. The victim was lodged under the car and rescuers pulled him out of the debris and rushed him to hospital.
The driver, a young man, reportedly told police later the didn't bring his driving license with him, a mistake that could lead to accusation of "driving without license".
H&M later said the store's reopening would take place tomorrow as previously scheduled without being disturbed by the accident.
