PET dogs are being used to patrol a neighborhood in Baoshan District to prevent burglaries ahead of the upcoming Spring Festival holiday.

The pet dogs can be seen patrolling with their owners every day after dinner.

Neighborhood committee officials said they started recruiting volunteers two weeks ago to patrol the community with their pet dogs to tighten security. Thus far, more than 40 residents have volunteered.

Each pet owner and their dog spend about an hour each day after dinner walking around the community looking out for anything suspicious. So far they haven't found anyone suspicious, committee officials said.

Community residents welcomed the new effort.

They said they believe thieves may be deterred from breaking into homes with so many large dogs around.
