SHANGHAI police today assured local people that the Mayas didn't predict the Apocalypse would happen toward the end of this year.

The police made the remark on their official Weibo microblog after they handled 25 rumor cases across the city in the last two days.

Rumors have circulated in recent years that the doomsday would arrive on December 21, 2012, instilling fears in the public.

In Nanjing of neighboring Jiangsu Province, a 54-year-old woman believed the theory and mortgaged her 3-million-yuan (US$481,000) house for 1 million yuan to give money to underprivileged children before the doomsday falls on December 21.
