THE Shanghai Cord Blood Bank has collected more than 20,000 units of umbilical cord blood since its establishment eight years ago.

The units included those donated by parents and some others. The payment for storage is returned to the owner if the sample is donated to a suitable patient. The bank has offered samples for 406 patients for transplant, including 131 patients so far this year, setting a record among all cord banks in China. To celebrate its eighth anniversary, the bank is offering eight units of umbilical cord blood free for patients from poor families.
