Heavy Showers For Holiday

HEAVY showers are forecast over the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, bringing some relief to Shanghai which has had its driest start to a year since 1873.

A subtropical high is moving northwards and, as a result, rain should reach the city by Friday, becoming heavier on Sunday and Monday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

The city's temperature during the holiday should be comfortable due to the cooling rain, with the low around 20 degrees Celsius and the high about 25 to 27 degrees, said the bureau.

This summer will probably not be as scorching as 2010. Last summer, Shanghai experienced four consecutive days with the high climbing above 39 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's record.

"Such a heatwave is unlikely again this summer, according to our analysis," said Shen Yu, senior engineer of the bureau. "But summer weather changes very fast, so we'll see how it develops."
