TWO workers were killed and two others injured in an explosion at a mobile phone components plant in suburban Jinshan District yesterday morning.

The accident happened at 9:20am at the factory in Jinshan's Luxiang Town, authorities said.

Fire was seen in a painting workshop, operated by Shanghai Hehong Huajin Nanotechnology Co, a Japanese-funded company based in Jinshan which mainly processes mobile phone and electronic product parts.

The workers were believed to be painting cellphone parts when the explosion occurred. It's believed that the blast happened after combustible gas ignited, authorities said.

The fire was extinguished after 15 minutes, the local fire department said.

A man and a woman died in the blast and two other staff were taken to hospital with serious burns, said officials.
