HTC Corp has launched lower-price smartphones in a bid to lure more users on the Chinese mainland where it is facing increased competition from rivals, and will also double its store network, it said yesterday.

The keener rivalry with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Android models in the high-end market has forced Taiwan-based HTC, which used to focus on high-end phones only, to switch strategy, industry insiders said. HTC also aims to have 4,000 retail stores on the mainland by the end of this year, up from 2,300 now.
