Deadly storms strike across China

A TORNADO flattened two classrooms in a village school in East China's Anhui Province yesterday, killing two students and injuring 46 others, said local government sources.

The tornado hit the primary school in Zhupeng Village of Changgou Town in Si County at about 7:30am, when students were preparing to take final examinations ahead of the summer vacation.

Two students were killed and 46 more were injured, including four in critical condition, confirmed the Si County Committee of the Communist Party of China.

In central China's Hunan Province, 21 people were killed, including the head of a local village, when a landslide occurred on Sunday.

Six others were still missing. And 11 villagers who were injured and hospitalized after the disaster were out of danger.

Liu Qingdong, the 32-year-old head of Qingshan'ao Village in Longhui County who was helping with the evacuation of the village was among the dead.

Local government officials said the landslide was caused by an 11-hour rainstorm.

Electricity and transportation links have since been restored.

In south China's island province of Hainan, passenger and freight liners resume yesterday morning, after a 24-hour suspension caused by tropical storm Jelawat.

The first ship with 160 passengers and 39 vehicles was allowed to set sail from Haikou, provincial capital, to Hai'an in neighboring Guangdong Province at 8am and more set off for Guangdong and Guangxi around noon, when gale on the Qiongzhou channel abated to below eight on the Beaufort scale.

Two passenger trains to Guangzhou via ferry ship, scheduled for 6pm and 10pm and canceled on Wednesday, will resume service, said an official with the Yuehai Railway Company.

The tropical storm Jelawat that appeared in the South China Sea on Tuesday landed on Zhanjiang, Guangdong, yesterday morning. It has since subsided to tropical depression, according to the Chinese Central Meteorological Station.

However, the Office for Flood, Drought and Typhoon Relief of Hainan called 19,082 ships back to port on Wednesday to avoid the storm.

Seven people were killed and one was missing yesterday afternoon after heavy rain hit Luzhou City in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Wednesday.

The rainstorm, begun on Wednesday, covered 28 villages in four counties. Seven villagers died in Gulin County.

The rainstorm ruined 20,000 hectares of farmland and destroyed 190 houses.
