THE worst tornado in the past century in Nanyang city, Henan Province, killed two people and injured 35, state radio reported yesterday on its Website.

The severe weather lasted for two hours on Wednesday night and affected 20 townships, said China National Radio. It also toppled 335 houses and damaged more than 1,000 others. The wind snapped or uprooted more than 150,000 trees. At least 41,500 hectares of crops were destroyed. Local authorities estimated economic losses at 136 million yuan (US$16.78 million).
