Death sentence for former rail boss
原铁道部运输局长张曙光被判死缓

A FORMER senior railways official convicted of bribes charges was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court also deprived Zhang Shuguang, former head of the now defunct Ministry of Railways’ transport bureau and deputy chief engineer, of political rights for life and confiscated his property.

His deputy Su Shunhu was given life imprisonment, deprived of political rights for life and had his property confiscated.

Zhang did not say if he would appeal.

The court found Zhang had taken bribes worth more than 47 million yuan (US$7.7 million) from 14 companies between 2000 and 2011, when he served in a variety of positions in the ministry.

He helped companies with contracts related to the sale of trains or parts, technical supplies and the bidding of projects, the court said.

It found that Su took bribes worth more than 24 million yuan from three companies between 2003 and 2011.

The court said its judgments had taken into consideration the defendants’ voluntary confessions about undiscovered bribery and their expressions of “sincere regret” for their wrongdoings.

Zhang was the second high-ranking railways official charged with bribery in China after former Railways Minister Liu Zhijun was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery and abuse of power in July.

The ministry was dismantled two years after two high-speed trains crashed in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, in 2011, killing 40 people. The incident prompted anti-corruption investigations and several officials were charged with abuse of power.

China, with the world’s longest high-speed rail network at more than 10,000 kilometers, has promised to open up the sector to private-sector investment.
