Zoo patrolman killed by tigers in Beijing

A patrolman at the Beijing Badaling Wildlife Park was killed by Bengal tigers inside the wild tiger zone on Thursday, the zoo confirmed yesterday.

An investigation by police and the zoo is underway, the Beijing Times reported today.

A visitor to the zoo surnamed Wang witnessed the incident and told media that he saw two tigers lie beside a motionless man next to a patrol jeep at the wild Bengal tiger zone about 1:30pm on Thursday when he drove his own car with wife and child to tour the area.

"A third tiger soon joined in and the tigers are biting the man's head, shoulders and abdomen," said Wang.

He immediately left the zone to call for help. Despite emergency treatment at the nearby Yanqing County Hospital, the patrolman died from serious injuries.

The patrolman surnamed Shao, 34, had been working for the zoo for seven years and he usually patrolled the tiger zone between 8am and 6pm, according to the Beijing Times, citing insiders at the zoo.

A manager with the wildlife park said it is strictly forbidden to get off cars or open the car windows in the tiger zone and the accident is still under investigation.

It is speculated that the patrolman got out of the jeep to relieve himself, the report said.
