Yakuza drug dealer given back to Japan

CHINESE police yesterday handed over a wanted drug dealer to Japanese police, the Ministry of Public Security said.

Ryuji Hasegawa, 46, was detained for an illegal overstay in Guangzhou, south China’s Guangdong Province, last month, the ministry said in a statement.

He was transferred to Japanese law enforcement officers following a request made by them via Interpol, it said.

Hasegawa is a member of the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest and most prominent group within the Japanese Yakuza crime syndicate, and has a criminal record in Japan that includes robbery, murder and drugs, the statement said.

According to Japanese police, in 2007 he ordered another Japanese citizen to smuggle 15,000 methamphetamine pills out of Shanghai and into Japan.

He was arrested in China in May 2008 with five other Japanese nationals and sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China’s Fujian Province, the ministry said.

Hasegawa was yesterday handed over to five Japanese police officers at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, from where he boarded a flight to Japan, the statement said.

China would like to enhance its cooperation with neighboring countries in fighting drug trafficking and keeping overseas drug syndicates out of the country, it said.

In pursuit of that goal, Chinese police will continue to keep a close eye on any Japanese or other foreign nationals who are involved in drug-related activities, it said.
