Xi’an to educate students about AIDS

THE number of students infected by HIV/AIDS in Xi’an, capital of northwest Shaanxi Province, has been rising every year between 2007 and 2013, local health officials said yesterday.

By last year, there were nearly 200 students in Xi’an with the HIV virus, with the majority of them male homosexuals, Xi’an-based Chinese Business View reported.

Officials from the Xi’an Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that HIV/AIDS cases had been growing annually since the first case was identified in 1992. They said males made up 90 percent of all the HIV/AIDS cases in the city, with the youngest sufferer just 15 years old.

To halt the spread, center officials have launched a campaign in 85 universities and colleges to educate students about the HIV virus.

It kicked off on Monday at Xi’an University, with 300 students taking part in the program.

According to the World Health Organization, AIDS has become the second cause of death for young people around the world.

On World AIDS Day last year, December 1, China reported that there had been 70,000 cases of new HIV infections in the first nine months of 2013, bringing the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS to 434,000.

From January to September, 80.7 million people were tested for HIV, an increase of 8.9 percent from the same period in 2012, according to National Health and Family Planning Commission.

Sexual transmission was identified as the cause of infection in 90 percent of the new cases, with about 69 percent from heterosexual practices and 21 percent through homosexual contact.
