CHINESE President Xi Jinping has paid a state visit to the Indian Ocean island country of Maldives. This is the first official visit from a Chinese head of state to the country since they established diplomatic relations 42 years ago.

It is the second meeting between President Xi Jinping and his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Yameen in one month. In their last encounter, it was President Yameen who visited the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing to attend the opening ceremony of the second Youth Olympics.

President Xi said these mutual visits highlight the close relations between the two countries. He added that the two countries should maintain their high-level exchanges and expand cooperation in various fields.

In particular, he said the Maritime Silk Road initiative was a flagship cooperation project. But he said China was ready to also deepen their partnership in maritime economy, security and scientific research. President Xi also said China would look into the bridge project aimed at connecting the Maldives’ capital Malle with its airport island.

President Xi also stressed that China understands the concerns of small island nations like the Maldives in combating climate change. He vowed that China will improve its coordination with the Maldives in international negotiations on climate issues and together safeguard the interest of developing countries.

Meanwhile, President Yameen said ties between China and the Maldives were a model for relations between big and small countries. He spoke highly of the Maritime Silk Road initiative and pledged Maldives’ commitment.

He said the bridge project is highly significant to the country and proposed calling it the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge. President Yameen also vowed to maintain cooperation with China in multilateral issues including climate change.

The two leaders then attended the signing ceremony of several documents that cemented cooperation in foreign policy, economy, trade and infrastructue construction.

President Xi also met with the former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. During his tenure, Gayoom paid two visits to China. President Xi urged him to continue promoting bilateral ties and mutual trust.
