Wrongly jailed man to sue for 3.3m yuan
A man who was released from prison last month after serving 16 years for a crime he didn’t commit is suing the government for 3.3 million yuan (US$540,000).
Xu Hui, a 56-year-old from Zhuhai, south China’s Guangdong Province, was sentenced to death with a 2-year reprieve in 1998 for the rape and murder of his next-door neighbor, New Express Daily reported yesterday.
The compensation figure comprises 2.1 million yuan for the psychological hardship suffered by his family and 1.2 million yuan for his loss of freedom.
Xu was sent to prison after being found guilty of the murder of Yan Chanjuan, who was found in the street in a small town in which the pair both worked.
His lawyer, Hou Yantao, was always convinced of his client’s innocence, however, and spent 16 years fighting for his release. The case was reopened in 2012.
After his release on September 14, Xu expressed his thanks to his lawyer and all of the people who had stood by him.
His priority now, he said, is looking after his wife who is in poor health.
