Watchdog bins Hershey’s chocolate

A BATCH of Hershey’s chocolate imported from Mexico was destroyed by authorities in Hainan Province, the quality watchdog said yesterday.

A total of 138 kilograms of chocolate imported by Hainan Duty-Free Product Co was destroyed in March. But the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China did not say why the chocolate was destroyed.

Hershey said it is communicating with authorities over the issue and will make an announcement in due course.

This was not the first time that imported Hershey’s products have been destroyed in China.

In July last year, about 4.5 tons of Hershey’s milk imported from the United States were destroyed by authorities in Guangdong Province after it was found to contain an artificial sweetener and coloring agent that are banned in milk products on the Chinese mainland.

Meanwhile, about 60kg of Kinder chocolate, made by Italian confectionery firm Ferrero SpA, and imported by a Shanghai company, were destroyed in March because of a labeling problem, the administration said.

Also, about 145kg of Mars chocolate imported from the United Kingdom and the US were destroyed in Shanghai in March.

A total of 311 imported food and cosmetics items were returned or destroyed due to quality problems in the month.
