Warning over fake edible salt in Henan

MORE than 20 tons of industrial salt camouflaged as normal edible salt are believed to be on market in central China’s Henan Province, officials said following a swoop on an underground workshop in the provincial capital Zhengzhou.

The local administration and police raided the den on Wednesday after receiving a tip. They confiscated nearly 28 tons of fake edible salt, described as Zhengzhou’s biggest haul, according to the People’s Daily website.

Also, authorities found that more than 400 bags of materials had been used and discarded, meaning nearly 20 tons of industrial salt had entered market and very likely been used in cooking. The amount is enough for 10,000 people to eat for a year, China Central Television reported.

But since there were no arrests, all suspects having escaped before the raid, it is unclear where the fake edible salt had been sent. Local residents were advised to buy salt from licensed and reputable shops, the People’s Daily website reported.

Office director of Zhengzhou Salt Industry Co, Yang Rongjian, told the website the confiscated “table salt” was actually industrial salt.

Usually, industrial salt is mostly poisonous nitrites, which can cause chronic poisoning with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, laxness and general weakness. Eating more than 3 grams of nitrites can be fatal. But industrial salt is usually much cheaper than table salt, luring unscrupulous vendors to engage in illegal business.

The state-owned China National Salt Industry Corp is in charge of undertaking the monopoly production of table salt, ensuring stable supplies of iodized salt nationwide.
