Villagers sleep on 13m yuan ‘cash bed’ to guard year-end bonus

BANK notes weighing a total of 156 kilograms, amounting to 13 million yuan (US$2.15 million), were passed out to eager villagers yesterday in Jianshe Village in southwest China’s Sichuan Province as year-end bonuses from a village-run agricultural company.

To keep the money safe, seven villagers were appointed to watch over it, including three who spent the night on a bed of cash after the money was picked up from the bank on Monday, according to Party chief Jin Hongyuan.

“We lay on 8 million yuan and took another 4.2 million yuan as pillows,” villager Jin Hongzhong said, West China Metropolis Daily reported today. “I felt uncomfortable sleeping on so many cash,” he said.

The excitement was palpable as nearly 340 households rushed to claim their dividends in the yard of the village committee yesterday morning. It took village officials nearly three hours to pass out the money,

Villagers received amounts ranging from tens of thousands of yuan to hundreds of thousands of yuan. Jin Ou was the biggest winner, with a bonus of 300,000 yuan, the newspaper reported.

“The weather was so cold. I had to count money for long time, until my hands were exhausted. I still couldn’t figure it out,” Jin said.

Local villagers pooled their resources to start the agricultural company in 2010.
