Victim families doubt expert testimony saying driver causing fatal crash 'had acute, transient mental disorder'

FAMILIES of two victims in a fatal car accident are doubting the expert testimony which said the suspected driver “had acute and transient mental disorder” at the time of collision, Modern Express reported today.

It occurred on June 20 in downtown Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province, when a BMW hit a Mazda, almost breaking up the Mazda and killing two occupants on board.

Police found the BMW driver, Wang Jijin, 35, was traveling at almost 200 kilometers per hour.

Tests showed he wasn’t driving under the influence of drug or alcohol.

Based on his abnormal acts, the Nanjing Brain Hospital said Wang had acute and transient mental disorder when the accident occurred, which suggested lighter sentence at court.

The result was given to the husband of one of the victims yesterday night.

He felt confused about how Wang’s mental status at the time of collision could be tested, the paper reported.

He said he would discuss with his relatives about whether to apply for another expert testimony, it reported.

Wang has been arrested on traffic offense. His family has paid each of the victims’ families 50,000 yuan (US$7,855) to cover funeral expenses, it reported.
