Trials could see sale of farmland
CHINA will stage a trial program that might allow farmers to sell land, a senior official said yesterday, a step toward liberalizing transactions now monopolized by the government.
The ability to sell land would help accelerate China’s urbanization by enabling farmers to realize value from their assets.
Under current law, all land in China is ultimately owned by the state or by rural collectives, while farmers can retain usage rights in the countryside.
Thirty-three county-level areas will suspend some rules banning the trade of non-farming land, said NPC spokeswoman Fu Ying, adding that the reform “intends to better protect farmers’ rights and interests.”
