Transport staff on trial over fatal crash
Three transport staff went on trial yesterday following a bus crash in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province that claimed 35 lives.
The defendants, who worked at a transport management station in Xi’an, knew almost three weeks before the accident that the bus wasn’t licensed to carry passengers, according to the prosecutor.
However, after a colleague intervened on behalf of the driver, they decided not to seize the vehicle or prevent it from operating, merely fining the driver 3,000 yuan (US$470).
The prosecutor said that the three had broken the rules and abused their power, making it possible for the bus to continue operating illegally.
The bus, carrying 46 people, crashed into a ravine some 30 meters deep in Chunhua County on May 15.
Twenty-five people died instantly while another 10 died after they had been admitted to hospital. The victims were residents of nearby cities, mostly senior citizens.
The case was heard at the People’s Court of Beilin District in Xi’an. The court said it would announce its verdict at a later date.
